The Brisbane River cod is an extinct subspecies of temperate perch that lived in the Brisbane River system, Australia and went extinct during the 1930s.

Description[]

The Brisbane River cod appears to be a subspecies of Maccullocella ikei or Maccullochella mariensis; the prevailing theory is that the Brisbane River cod is an in-between of the two species. The Brisbane River cod is carnivorous, and is adorned with seven fins on its body. It is known only from one juvenile museum specimen collected ~100 years ago. It has not been formally described[1][2].

Paleoecology[]

The Brisbane River cod lived in the Brisbane River, Queensland, Australia. Since its extinction, the rivers have been restocked with Mary River cod, posing a similar ecological niche the Brisbane River cod once filled. The Brisbane River cod were predators, preying on small fish[2].

Extinction[]

During the 1930s, the fish was put through hard circumstances, which ultimately caused the extinction of the subspecies. The Brisbane River cod was overfished, had its habitat destroyed, and was affected by siltation. The ash of nearby bushfires polluted the waters, and made them un-inhabitable to a certain degree[2].
