When the genus Contectopalatus was coined, some scientists like Maisch and Matzke thought it was valid, but other sources argued that Contectopalatus is a synonym for Mixosaurus. The fossil attributed to Contectopalatus was first named Ichthyosaurus atavus, then Mixosaurus atavus.
