Liliensternus is an extinct genus of basal neotheropod dinosaur that lived in Germany during the Late Triassic

Description[]

Two specimens are known, which forms a syntype series categorized as MB.R.2175. They consist of partial fragmentary skeletons of at least two individuals with crania, vertebrae and the appendicular skeleton. The tibia is shorter than the femur in both it and Dilophosaurus, and unlike coelophysoids. Thus Liliensternus may be considered intermediary of them. Many reconstructions give it a crest similar to Dilophosaurus despite there being no evidence of this. Th ilium is very short, as in the latter, It bears 5 digits on the hand, with the 4th and 5th being smaller, which may represent the trasition from 5 fingers to 3. Rauhut et al. (1998) note that some remains may actually be of juveniles or subadults, based on how only two sacrals are fused at the neurocentral sutures.
