Smilodon is an extinct genus of cat that lived in Cenozoic South America from 2.5 mya – 10,000 years ago.
Smilodons design is well known by many as a sleek feline with long saber teeth hanging down from its upper jaw. It is disputed whether Smilodon hunted in packs or was solitary. Many fossils of Smilodon have been uncovered in La Brea tar pits because of its hunting habits. When large mammals got stuck in tar, Smilodon would attack and get stuck itself. Smilodons long saber teeth were often broken in combat and it is unknown if they could grow back. Smilodons are theorized to have used their saber teeth to puncture the jugular of prey.
